PG&E has proposed burying two thousand miles of California’s power lines to reduce risk of deadly wildfires. But state regulators say they’re against it, claiming it would take too long and cost too much. The cost of almost six billion dollars would be passed onto customers, who are already paying some of the highest rates in the country. The California Public Utilities Commission wants PG&E to put protective covers over power lines instead of burying them. The technique costs less, but is much less effective. The commission will make a ruling next month.
