At least one-third of the nation’s homeless vets are in California. The state spends billions on homeless veteran programs, but veteran homeless numbers remain mostly unchanged. Some hope Governor Newsom’s six-point-four-billion dollar mental health bond will address the problem. It’s a shift from historical measures, namely, providing housing to homeless vets. California has eight veteran homes, but many are underused. Newsom tried to shut one down in 2020, but was overruled. Advocates say Newsom’s new strategy in the mental health bond will help those most in need. Data shows one half of homeless vets have a behavioral health issue.
