Humboldt County Judge Gregory Kreis resigned on Monday, vowing to never serve as a California judicial officer again as part of a stipulated agreement with the Commission on Judicial Performance. Kreis was accused of many acts, largely surrounding a failure to disclose his relationships with attorneys he presided over, inappropriate remarks and misconduct outside the courthouse. Kreis admitted to 17 out of 21 counts against him. Judge Kelly Neel now serves as the Humboldt County Superior Court’s presiding judge alongside new Assistant Presiding Judge Timothy Canning. Former Deputy Conflict Counsel April Van Dyke, who beat Kreis in the recent judicial election, will take office in January 2025.
