Meals on Wheels, which helps Sonoma County senior citizens who want free meals delivered, is experiencing the first waitlist they’ve ever had. Rising costs and federal funding cuts have set a limit on how many seniors are enrolled. The nonprofit serves an average of 1,000 people a day. That’s something that hasn’t happened in 20 years. In a month and half, the waiting list has grown to 174 people. The Santa Rosa Council on Aging is turning to local donors and grants for support. For each $20,000 raised, 15 people can start receiving meal delivery service.
