California voters are getting tough on crime. They passed Prop 36 last night which makes shoplifting a felony for repeat offenders, along with other misdemeanor thefts. It also increases punishment for some drug charges, including fentanyl.
As for other state propositions measures, 57-percent voted yes on Prop 2, which sells bonds to fund schools. Prop 3, the constitutional right to same-sex marriage, passed 61-to-39 percent. Fifty-eight percent voted yes on Prop 4 to authorize bonds for safe drinking water, wildfire protection, and hardening communities and natural lands against climate risks. Prop 34, the measure restricting healthcare spending of prescription drug revenue, passed by a narrow margin. Prop 35 provides permanent funding for Medi-Cal and passed by a two-to-one margin.
