Baby monkey rescued from DUI driver, recovering at Oakland Zoo

A baby monkey, likely abducted by poachers, was rescued from a suspected DUI driver in California earlier this week and is now receiving critical veterinary care at the Oakland Zoo. The five-month-old female spider monkey was found clinging to 27-year-old Ali Mused Adel Mohamed during a traffic stop in the Central Valley. Mohamed was arrested for DUI and illegal possession of an exotic animal. The Oakland Zoo’s vice president of animal care, Colleen Kinzley, explained that poachers often shoot the mothers of wild baby monkeys before selling them to buyers through social media. The malnourished monkey is suffering from a respiratory infection and faces a tough road to recovery. “We are very concerned about her physical and emotional well-being. She should be with her mother. She would be with her mother for two years nursing. She needs to be fed around the clock. We are trying very hard to try to help her make it,” Zoo officials told KSRO.
