Construction on the long-awaited SMART train pathway is nearing completion in several Sonoma County segments, but eager cyclists and pedestrians are already trespassing on the unfinished sections.
While SMART officials understand the excitement, they emphasize that these areas are still under construction and pose safety hazards. Despite delays, the pathway is expected to be open to the public by the end of March. Once completed, these segments will significantly improve bike commuting options, connecting cities like Rohnert Park and Santa Rosa.
However, the slow pace of pathway construction has been a source of frustration for cyclists and advocates who have been waiting years for the full vision of a 70-mile bike path to be realized.
