Napa city officials are exploring a plan to convert two downtown apartment buildings into long-term supportive housing for individuals exiting homelessness. The proposal hinges on securing a $10 million grant from California’s Homekey+ program. This program helps cities create affordable housing, with a focus on veterans and those with behavioral health needs.
The two properties, located on Fourth and Division Streets, already house vulnerable renters through partnerships with Section 8 and homeless service programs. The current owner has approached the city about selling the buildings, each containing 12 one-bedroom units. Existing tenants would remain, and supportive services would be added.
Napa has successfully used Homekey funding before, notably converting the former Wine Valley Lodge into a 54-unit supportive housing complex. However, other housing initiatives in the city have faced public concerns. And, as the Los Angeles Times reported, some Homekey projects in other cities have been plagued by issues like fraud.
