Twenty years ago, a pivotal wine tasting sparked a revolution at Tablas Creek Vineyard in Paso Robles, highlighting the potential of the rare Picpoul Blanc grape.
Now, this high-acid white grape, originally from Southern France, is gaining popularity in California, particularly in Sonoma County.
Winemakers are drawn to Picpoul Blanc’s ability to thrive in warm climates while maintaining its vibrant acidity. It’s considered a grape for the future, as it’s both heat and drought tolerant. Pioneering efforts by Tablas Creek to import the grape have led to its spread, with winemakers like those at Marine Layer Wines and Guthrie Family Wines producing unique expressions of this “lip-stinging” variety.
With its crisp, refreshing character, Picpoul Blanc is being seen as a promising alternative to more common grapes like Chardonnay.
Winemakers highlight its versatility and suitability for California’s Mediterranean climate, leading to innovative creations like sparkling orange wines.
