Fort Bragg is building a water desalination plant, thanks to a one-and-a-half million dollar grant and new technology from Oneka Technologies. Officials say that after almost running out of water in 2015, Fort Bragg sought out alternative solutions to their water problem. They have no underground water sources like most areas, which puts them in a precarious position. In 2015 they told residents to use paper plates instead of washing dishes and other water saving measures. The wave-powered desalination technology uses no fossil fuels, skipping the conversion to electricity to run pumps. If the project is successful, the city says it will increase funding.
