Costco has rolled out membership card scanners at the entrances of several Bay Area stores to deter non-members from shopping. Customers now need to scan their physical or digital membership cards, which will display an identification photo that must match the cardholder. Stores in Santa Rosa, Novato, and San Francisco have already implemented these scanners, with more locations to follow soon. This initiative is part of Costco’s ongoing efforts to prevent membership sharing, as the company relies heavily on membership fees to maintain low prices.
