
It looks like the latest COVID surge is on its way out of the Bay Area. Local experts have been monitoring wastewater and say cases are down after one of the worst summer waves. The peaks were not only higher than last summer, but even topped numbers from 2022 when the highly-contagious Omicron variant surfaced. Doctors are confident the new booster that just came out will make a big difference heading into flu season.
However, Sonoma County is confirming eight COVID outbreaks at its senior care facilities during the month of August. That’s compared to three such outbreaks in May. And, in January, which has been the peak month of COVID transmission since the start of the pandemic, there were also three outbreaks in local senior care facilities. The county defines an outbreak in a skilled nursing home as two or more connected cases during a one-week period.
