Sonoma County Supervisor Lynda Hopkins is taking issue with Governor Gavin Newsom’s redistricting efforts.
Hopkins has seen backlash and support since she made a Facebook post about the issue last Saturday. Hopkins is a Democrat, like Newsom and the supermajority of lawmakers backing the move in the Legislature.
In the post, Hopkins says it hurts her heart that red districts are being turned into blue districts by “diluting the rural vote.” She is also against carving up western Sonoma County, the area she represents, into separate congressional districts.
The effort is designed to pick up five House seats for the Democratic party, to counteract similar efforts by Republican lawmakers in Texas.
