Petaluma City Schools is facing a financial crisis after the Measure I parcel tax failed to gain the required two-thirds vote in the recent election.
According to the Petaluma Argus-Courier, the $129 annual tax, which would have raised $3 million annually, has been officially deemed a failure by district leaders.
Superintendent Matthew Harris announced that the district must now implement $4 million to $5 million in cuts from the 2026-2027 budget. Harris warned that these “drastic” reductions will impact every school, program, and staff member.
The School Board will begin public discussions on the cuts in December.
