SMART Board Endorses Measure To Renew Funding

SMART rail is officially back on the ballot. This week, the board endorsed a citizens’ initiative to extend the train’s primary funding for the next 30 years.

According to the Marin Independent Journal, the measure, set for the June 2nd election, aims to renew the quarter-cent sales tax that funds half of SMART’s operations. Without it, service could cease when the tax expires in 2029.

Unlike a 2020 attempt that required a two-thirds supermajority, this new “citizens’ initiative” needs only a simple majority to pass. Supporters emphasize that this is a 30-year extension, not a tax increase.

If approved, it will secure current service and fund extensions to Healdsburg and Cloverdale.
