Santa Rosa City Schools To Lay Off Over 100-Full Time Staff Members

Sonoma County’s largest school district has unveiled a drastic fiscal plan that includes laying off more than 100 full-time staff members to avoid a state takeover.

The Press Democrat reports the cuts hit almost every campus, eliminating all elementary counselors, nearly 75% of school-based therapists, and several special education teachers as the district struggles to fill a massive budget hole.

Interim Superintendent Lisa August Hulme says these “painful” reductions are necessary after reserves were drained by declining enrollment and rising special education costs, with final layoff notices expected to go out this March.
