A major hazardous materials scare shut down the south end of Santa Rosa yesterday after a potential hydrogen cyanide leak forced nearly 17,000 residents to shelter in place.
The Press Democrat reports fire crews rushed to Santa Rosa Avenue near Todd Road after reports of a gas smell, closing the thoroughfare for hours while they worked to neutralize the highly toxic chemical.
The shelter-in-place order was officially lifted last night with no injuries reported, though investigators are still working to determine exactly what caused the dangerous leak.
