Layoffs, Consolidation & Graduation Requirements To Be Discussed By Santa Rosa City Schools Trustees

Santa Rosa City Schools trustees are bracing for a high-stakes meeting tonight as they move to approve at least 100 staff layoffs to address what state experts call the worst cash crisis of any district in California.

The Press Democrat reports the cuts, which target counselors and support staff, are part of a desperate push to trim over $26 million and avoid a state takeover, following years of declining enrollment and deficit spending.

Beyond the layoffs, the board is also set to discuss a controversial plan to consolidate ten local school districts into just three, as well as a possible overhaul of the district’s strict “college-prep” graduation requirements.
