A Santa Rosa man will spend at least five decades behind bars for a 2024 shooting that terrorized a local shopping center.
The Press Democrat reports forty-three-year-old Steven Carter Strawn was sentenced Wednesday to 50 years to life in prison. The sentence follows his conviction for attempted murder and assault with an assault weapon stemming from a confrontation at Dutton Plaza in September 2024.
Prosecutors say Strawn was harassing patrons and people on the Joe Rodota Trail before opening fire with an illegal, short-barreled assault rifle from a moving vehicle. Fortunately, no one was hit, and the weapon jammed after several rounds. A nearby officer caught Strawn minutes later as he attempted to clear the jammed rifle.
Because Strawn had three prior “strikes” on his record, Judge Lynnette Brown handed down the maximum sentence. His accomplice, Jared Ambrose, was previously sentenced to over four years for his role in the incident.
