Rincon Valley Music Program Faces Major Cuts

The rhythmic halls of the Rincon Valley Union School District may soon fall silent. As the district grapples with an $8.5 million deficit, a new budget proposal threatens to slash the elementary music program nearly in half.

According to the Press Democrat, for years, Rincon Valley has integrated music into the school day while classroom teachers take their prep time. But a new plan to move that prep time to before or after school would eliminate the window for mid-day music instruction. While the district currently spends $1.2 million on the program—funded by the Measure H parcel tax—officials say rising costs and tax exemptions for seniors have outpaced revenue.

Interim Superintendent Mike Herfurth says they hope to save up to $500,000 by cutting roughly four of the district’s eight music teachers. However, educators and union leaders warn that moving music to before or after school creates a barrier for students who lack transportation, effectively silencing the program for those who need it most.
