Sonoma Sets 2026 Climate and Housing Roadmap

Sonoma city leaders have greenlit an ambitious new “climate roadmap” while facing growing public pressure over how to develop the historic Sebastiani Winery property.

Per the Sonoma Index-Tribune, the City Council unanimously approved a 2026 Work Plan that will launch a public database to track carbon reduction and prioritize new local cooling centers. The city also reviewed its annual housing progress, noting several large projects in the pipeline to meet state mandates.

However, residents stole the spotlight during public comment, urging officials to favor affordable housing or senior living over a major hotel at the Sebastiani site. Critics argued that with only one in five local workers living in the city, the winery land is a missed opportunity for housing.

While no final decision was made on the property’s future, the council also faced calls to establish permanent arts funding and better bus connections to the SMART train.
