Authorities have finally solved a decades-old mystery involving human remains found on a Sonoma County beach. The DNA Doe Project announced today that a bone discovered by a family searching for seashells at Salmon Creek in 2022 belongs to Walter Karl Kinney.
Kinney was a fifty-nine-year-old former banker from Santa Rosa who mysteriously disappeared way back in 1999. Investigators worked for years to crack the case, using advanced genetic testing to connect the remains to the missing man.
Team leads for the project described the case as one of the most “unusual” they’ve ever handled given the passage of time and the nature of the discovery. While the identification brings some closure, it serves as a haunting reminder of a disappearance that went cold for nearly thirty years.
