Windsor council members have taken a major step toward placing a first-of-its-kind one-cent sales tax on the November ballot.
Per the Press Democrat, the unanimous 5-0 vote aims to address a massive structural deficit that has already forced millions in spending cuts and deferred maintenance.
If approved by voters, the tax would generate roughly $5.5 million annually to protect basic services and offset rising costs for police and operations. However, the proposal faces an uphill battle, as recent polling shows support sitting at just 47 percent.
While some officials warn of deeper cuts without new revenue, others remain skeptical that residents will approve the increase during a period of economic strain.
