Convicted Ex-Officer Seeks New Trial in Highway Extortion Case

A former Rohnert Park police sergeant is fighting for a retrial after being convicted of posing as a federal agent to steal cannabis and cash on Highway 101.

Joseph Huffaker’s legal team argues that a key co-defendant gave “false testimony” regarding a forged police report used to cover up their crimes. Federal prosecutors have fired back, calling the evidence of extortion “overwhelming” and dismissing the request as a delay tactic.

Huffaker is currently facing over five years in prison for conspiracy and obstruction of justice.

A judge is set to hear the motion next Wednesday, the same day Huffaker is scheduled for sentencing.
