Petaluma City Schools Board Approves Year-Round Pride Flag Display

The Petaluma City Schools Board of Education voted unanimously this week to fly the “Progress Pride” flag at all district campuses throughout the entire school year.

The Petaluma Argus-Courier reports this new policy mandates that the flag be displayed daily beneath the U.S. and California flags as a permanent symbol of the district’s commitment to LGBTQIA+ inclusion. District leaders, including Superintendent Matthew Harris, stated the year-round approach provides the most consistent message of safety and belonging for all students and staff.

While the district previously only flew the flag during Pride Month, officials believe this expanded visibility is crucial for supporting those who have faced bullying or exclusion. Despite past safety concerns regarding the flag’s presence, the board emphasized that fostering a welcoming environment remains their top priority.

The flags were expected to be raised across all campuses by the end of last week.
