Inside Santa Rosa’s $35 Million Recycling Hub: High-Tech Success and the Plastic Problem

Recology Sonoma Marin’s upgraded south Santa Rosa plant is now processing 350 tons of recycling daily, boosting recovery rates to 85% for the region.

The Press Democrat reports while high-tech sorters efficiently manage paper and metal, “contamination” from non-recyclables like plastic bags and fabric remains a costly challenge. New state data highlights a deeper issue: while glass and cardboard recycling is thriving, most plastics still see recycling rates in the single digits.

Facility managers stress that while their machinery is more advanced than ever, the global market for recycled plastic remains volatile and limited.

Ultimately, they warn that recycling alone can’t solve the waste crisis without a significant reduction in plastic production.
