Rohnert Park Growth Sparks Transitional Kindergarten Waitlists

Rapid housing growth and new state mandates have left many Rohnert Park parents scrambling as local transitional kindergarten programs hit capacity.

The Press Democrat reports unlike neighboring districts facing enrollment declines, the Cotati-Rohnert Park School District has added nearly seven hundred students since 2021, fueled largely by new developments like SOMO Village.

The influx has resulted in long waitlists for neighborhood schools, forcing some families to choose between schools miles apart or paying for private preschool. District officials have added sixteen specialized classrooms to meet demand and are prioritizing new facilities at Monte Vista and Marguerite Hahn elementary schools.

While parents describe the placement process as a major stressor, district leaders express confidence that every applicant will be offered a seat before the end of the month. Education advocates say the situation highlights the uneven challenges California districts face in rolling out universal pre-K amidst local housing booms.
