The Santa Rosa Catholic Diocese is filing for Chapter Eleven bankruptcy protection. Bishop Robert F. Vasa filed the petition in U.S. Bankruptcy Court on Monday. The diocese is anticipating having to pay millions of dollars to settle child sex abuse claims filed during the past three years. Vasa says, if he hadn’t filed for bankruptcy, the legal claims would overwhelm the diocese’s resources and disrupt its abilities to carry out its ministries. The Santa Rosa Diocese estimates it has both assets and liabilities valued in the ten-million to 50-million-dollar range.
