West Nile Virus Found in Dead Crow in Sonoma County

West Nile Virus has been detected in Sonoma County. The Marin/Sonoma Mosquito and Vector Control District has confirmed that a dead American Crow collected in east Petaluma was infected with West Nile Virus. The virus spreads mostly through mosquitoes that feed on infected birds who then can spread it to humans and other animals. Authorities urge you to eliminate stagnant water in your yards, introduce mosquitofish to permanent ponds, and take personal protection measures against mosquito bites. The CDC says 1 in 5 people who are infected with West Nile develop a fever and other symptoms and 1 in 150 may develop a serious illness that leads to death. West Nile Virus has also been found in mosquitoes in Napa County.
