Healdsburg Working to Clear Invasive Reeds for Wildfire Prep

Work is underway to cut down on the potential impacts of future wildfires in Healdsburg. This week, crews have been cutting down Arundo donax along the edge of the Russian River near Badger Park. Stalks of the invasive reed can grow 30 feet long. Healdsburg Fire Marshal Lance Macdonald says the reed can be severely problematic if it burns. He says, in 2017, a burning reed threw off so much heat it melted the soles of his firefighting boots. The reed tends to grow extremely fast and in large, dense colonies.
