Community Conversations on Race – Angie Dillon Shore, First 5 Sonoma County

capconversationsonrace-2

Host Michelle Marques talks with Angie Dillon Shore, Executive Director at First 5 Sonoma County. Angie talks about efforts at First 5 to uplift and support BIPOC families, who were impacted much more profoundly by the pandemic, and whose children are more likely to be at a disadvantage as they start kindergarten. In 2020, First 5 decided to actively focus on BIPOC children and their families, and have created a draft of actionable programs.

One program that is about to accept applications (beginning September 1st) is a Guaranteed Basic Income pilot program. It is funded by money from the American Rescue Plan Act as well as other resources, and will supply a monthly payment to 305 families for two years. Similar programs in other parts of the country have made an impact on families, allowing them to have more financial security which in turn alleviates stress of finding money to pay for basic items like food, auto repairs, and rent. There will be more information about the program at first5sonomacounty.org

Host Michelle Marques talks with Lindsay Musco, Founder/Creator of Poppy + Vine and Wine Country Distillery Festival, Saturday, August 13th from noon to 4pm at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. This year the Festival will be outdoors on the East Lawn, with plenty of parking available on site. Your ticket also comes with credits for ride sharing services Lyft and Uber to make sure everyone gets home safely.

Sip and sample spirits from an array of mostly local spirits producers, as well as small bites, a cocktail competition, a silent auction benefiting the Robert Ferguson Observatory, a ticket for a Big Bite dish from one of a few vendors, live music, and more! VIP tickets are also available with a private shaded area, demonstrations, a private bathroom, and other perks. There are also Designated Driver tickets that come with food and non-alcoholic beverages.

The event is a benefit for the Robert Ferguson Observatory, an almost all-volunteer run resource that typically serves about 10,000 visitors annually. The observatory is located in Sugarloaf State Park and houses a 40-inch reflector telescope, the largest telescope in Northern California that is accessible to the public.
