Community Conversations on Race – Dr. Brenda Flyswithhawks
Host Michelle Marques talks with Dr. Brenda Flyswithhawks, Professor at Santa Rosa Junior College and President of the Native American Faculty and Staff Association. Dr. Flyswithhawks shares her story of becoming a professor at SRJC and her work to spotlight the role of Native people in our community and in higher education. She also shares the meaning of "Land Acknowledgements," and why this step is so important for not only showing respect to Indigenous peoples, but also opening the path to further conversations and actions that expand inclusion and diversity.
Dr. Flyswithhawks also addresses the media coverage of Gabby Petito's murder, and how it was vastly disproportionate to coverage of missing and murdered Native women. There is currently legislation at the federal level called the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act, which seeks to prevent and respond to domestic violence, sexual assault, dating violence, and stalking. The Act was passed by the House in March this year, and now it needs lawmakers in the Senate to see it through. Contact your Senator with your support of this important legislation.
