Community Conversations on Race – Being Latina in Sonoma County and Living Between Two Cultures

capconversationsonrace

Host Michelle Marques talks with Kathy Kane, Director of Services at CAP Sonoma and America Rosales, Program Manager for Via Esperanza about being Latina in Sonoma County, and the struggles they have living between two cultures. Kathy was born in the US and her parents chose not to speak Spanish in the home, so she grew up only speaking English. She talks about the judgement she gets from fellow Latinas and Latinos who don't understand why she doesn't speak Spanish. America came to Sonoma County when she was 10 years old and struggled to assimilate and learn English. Both women encourage those in our community to withhold judgement and to accept people for who they are.
