A bill aimed at ending cash bail in California is headed to the Senate after being passed by the State Assembly. Democratic Assemblymember Wendy Carrillo says passing the bill would ensure you can’t put a price on freedom.

Senate Bill 10 passed Monday and would rid the cash bail system that some say favor the rich and discriminates against the poor. Supporters argue it would overhaul a system in which defendants are released based on whether they have the money to post bail. Critics say the bill is too generalized and won’t allow judges to decide on a case by case basis who should be held without bail and who shouldn’t. The Senate has two weeks to decide whether to send it to Governor Jerry Brown’s desk.
