Work into extending the SMART train to Windsor has begun. The Press Democrat reports that SMART has begun welding work on new steel rail after delivery of nearly 1,000 tons of steel and 11,000 new concrete rail ties. The project calls for reconstructing a 3 mile segment of rail line including replacing five wooden bridges. The goal is to have the extension to Windsor completed by 2021. However, a protracted legal battle over $40 million to help pay for the project is tied up over a toll hike on state-owned bridges approved by Bay Area voters in June 2018.
