Some food stamp cards in California are being drained of their funds by scammers. The Cal Fresh EBT cards sent out to recipients are old fashioned in that they only have a magnetic strip and not a more secure chip. That means they are vulnerable to skimmers which are often installed without the knowledge of the store owner. One benefits recipient tells NBC Los Angeles the 280 bucks on his card was suddenly gone one day. After he reported it and the state put more money on his card, that was stolen as well. The California Department of Social Services acknowledges the problem and says they are working to improve security in the system.
