With the new year comes new laws in the state, but laws surrounding the use of cannabis in California will remain the same for now. There is a new law that offers cannabis users more protection from weed bias by their employers when smoked outside of work, but that doesn’t kick in until 2024. Everything else also stays the same. You have to be at least 21 to use recreational pot, but minors can apply for a medical marijuana ID card. You need to have a license to sell weed. It’s also illegal to smoke weed in public and, like alcohol, you can’t consume products or have open containers of marijuana while operating a vehicle. You also can’t possess more than 28.5 grams of weed, or more than eight grams of concentrated cannabis or you’ll face jail time if you’re over 18. Schools remain marijuana free zones. Traveling with marijuana products also remains the same. It’s legal in California at airports under a certain amount, but once you reach TSA that’s a federal matter and under federal law weed is still illegal.
