A mother has been convicted of reporting a fake kidnapping attempt at a craft store in Petaluma. On Wednesday, a jury found former Sonoma resident Katie Sorenson guilty of one count of making a false report of a crime. She was acquitted on the first two counts she was charged with. She now faces up to six months in jail. Sorenson told police a couple tried to kidnap her one and four-year-old kids at a Michael’s store in December of 2020. Sorenson recounted the alleged events in an Instagram video, which went viral. Prosecutors say she made up the story to grow her social media following.
