Sonoma Sheriff Watchdog Uses New Agreement for Investigating Deputy Involved Shootings

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Department’s independent watchdog no longer needs to wait for internal investigations to wrap up to start investigating deadly deputy-involved shootings. That’s because of a new agreement, announced Wednesday. The Independent Office of Law Enforcement Review and Outreach is wasting no time taking advantage of the change. It has already started investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting that happened last July, when a migrant worker was shot next to a creek bed in remote Knights Valley. The man’s family has filed a federal lawsuit against the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office, claiming wrongful death and excessive use of force.
