Governor Newsom Gets Push Back on San Quentin Plan

California legislators are pushing back on Governor Gavin Newsom’s bid to transform the infamous San Quentin Prison into a rehabilitation center. The state Assembly and Senate have questioned Newsom’s 360-million dollar proposal to reform the maximum-security prison into a health-focused and education facility. Critics have called the plan “unrealistic.” Last week, the Legislative Analyst’s Office said the proposal does not have a clear objective, lacks key information and that the proposed 2025 project deadline is “unnecessary and problematic.” The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation called the criticism “premature.”
