A large hydropower storage facility proposed for the Sonoma Coast is facing backlash. Plans for the project near Fort Ross call for seawater being sucked into pipes and brought uphill, where it would be used to generate electricity during peak demand. This week, California Senate Majority Leader Mike McGuire, of Healdsburg, called the project “dead on arrival.” He says a project of its size and scope would never get approved in a region as environmentally sensitive at the Sonoma Coast. An Alabama-based company called Hydro Green Energy is behind the proposal.
