State lawmakers are introducing another version of a bill aimed at protecting wildfire victims from paying federal taxes on compensation they receive for lives, homes and businesses that were lost. The first version of the bill was introduced in March of 2022 by Representative Mike Thompson of Saint Helena and Representative Doug LaMalfa of Richvale. It got stuck in the House Ways and Means Committee. Another version introduced at the start of this year also failed to move forward. Thompson says the latest version of the bill is written to have a better chance of passing.
