A Laytonville man has died after jumping into the Eel River in Mendocino County. On Monday afternoon, 54-year-old Anthony Sasso was with a friend at the river near Highway 162 in an area just southwest of Covelo. After jumping into the deep end of the river, Sasso appeared to be in distress and sank to the bottom. His friend couldn’t get a cell signal and contacted road workers for help. Over an hour later, rescuers were able to retrieve Sasso’s body. It was the third drowning victim in Mendocino County for the month of July.
