Anova School Still in Portable Classrooms Six Years After Tubbs Fire

A school for high-functioning autistic children and young adults still has not been rebuilt since it was destroyed in the Tubbs Fire of 2017. The Press Democrat reports that the Anova Center for Education in northeast Santa Rosa is still operating out of portable classrooms that were put up after the fire. Anova got far less from an insurance payout than expected and cannot afford to build a modern campus up to code. They have purchased land for a new site at the Santa Rosa Airport Business Center but fundraising efforts for building are slow. They have $10-million saved up for a new school that is expected to cost nearly $27-million. Anova is hoping for a boost from residents and businesses to help make up the difference. Portable units are not ideal for any student but especially for autistic students who can find it distracting and unnerving.
