More card skimmers are being reported in Sonoma County. Petaluma police found a skimmer on an ATM after a local reported it hanging off the ledge. The fake mold had a small camera hooked up to a memory card which captured video and audio. Also in Petaluma, a terminal cover outfitted with a computer board was attached to the real card reader at a retail store. Scammers were then able to access the stolen card information online. As scammers use more sophisticated technology, it’s important to remain vigilant in protecting yourself from becoming a victim of these types of fraud.
Petaluma Police recommend that the you:
-inspect the ATM, gas pump, or card reader before using it; compare it to the other nearby machines to see if it looks crooked, loose, or damaged
-block the keypad with your hand to prevent potential hidden cameras from recording the number
-use a mobile wallet as payment is more secure
-sign up for bank alerts and check your accounts regularly
