Be extra careful when driving this week. School is back in Sonoma County. Most school districts in the county will be starting up classes again within the next couple of days, including Santa Rosa City Schools, Petaluma City Schools, West Sonoma County High, and Cotati-Rohnert Park Unified, all on August 16th. As a result, many law enforcement agencies are reminding drivers, parents, and students to be extra careful and to follow certain rules and guidelines. Santa Rosa police suggests the following:
- Many students will be walking and/or riding bicycles to school.
- Parents should ensure that children who ride bicycles wear properly fitting helmets.
- Parents have conversations with your children regarding the importance of being alert while preparing to and entering a crosswalk.
- Use the buddy system while walking to school when possible.
- Expect heavy traffic back-ups in school zones.
- Motorists should avoid school zones if possible.
- Be patient and drive carefully.
- The first few weeks of school are always extra busy so leave plenty of time to travel.
- When a school bus stops, and the red lights are flashing – traffic approaching from either direction is required to stop.
- Do not text and drive. Even at a red light, it is a violation.
