Bacterial Disease Believed to have Killed Sea Lions Found on Doran Beach

Wildlife experts believe a bacterial disease is responsible for several sea lion deaths along the Sonoma coast. Several dead sea lions washed ashore on Doran Beach in Bodega Bay last weekend. Officials with the Marine Mammal Center say the sea lions, mostly immature males, contracted leptospirosis while in breeding grounds in the Channel Islands. Several other beaches in central and northern California have seen an unusually high number of sick and dead sea lions as of late.
