Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit has more money needed to build its passenger line closer to Healdsburg. The agency received a nearly 32-million-dollar federal grant on Monday. Twenty-eight-million-dollars of the funding will be used to further cover the cost of extending SMART’s rail line by five miles north, from Windsor to Healdsburg. The total cost of the five-mile segment of track is estimated at 160-and-a-half-million-dollars. SMART now has 65-percent of the segment financed. The remaining four-million-dollars from the grant will be used to buy new freight locomotives that produce less smog.
