Governor Newsom Signs Bill Banning Added-On Junk Fees

Those extra fees that show up when you check in at the hotel are going to be a thing of the past soon in California. Governor Gavin Newsom is signing a new law to outlaw so-called “junk fees.” President Biden called out the practice of adding hidden fees during his State of the Union address. The author of the new law, state Senator Bill Dodd says the fees get tacked on to seemingly everything from concert tickets to hotel reservations. The bill would expressly prohibit the practice of advertising a certain price and then adding on mandatory charges that are controlled by the business. Companies that fail to comply with the new rules could be subject to steep financial penalties.
