Animal activist Wayne Hsiung is testifying in his own defense after being charged with trespassing at two poultry farms in the Petaluma area. On Thursday, Hsiung, who is also accused of felony conspiracy, told a courtroom he went to the farms in 2018 and 2019 to rescue chickens living in inhumane conditions. He showed the jury a picture of a chicken with an eye injury, which he says represented the chicken population at one of the farms, called Sunrise Farms, at the time. Hsiung says the chicken was too frail to flee humans, and claims that picture justifies a protest by he and other animal activists in 2018.
